Welcome to Cumbria Combined Authority

Devolution means more decisions about Cumbria will be made in Cumbria. Cumbria will have a national voice, and Cumbria will get more investment.

The Cumbria Combined Authority (CCA) will be set up in early 2026. Elections for Cumbria's first Mayor will take place in May 2027.

This isn’t about merging councils or taking decisions away from them. Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council will still provide your local services.

What devolution means for Cumbria

More say in big decisions

Through their seat on the Council of Nations and Regions, Cumbria’s mayor will ensure Cumbrian priorities and interests are represented at the heart of government decision making. The CCA will get new powers that currently sit with the Government. Decisions about Cumbria will be made in Cumbria, instead of Westminster. This will include powers to:

  • create a single plan for transport in Cumbria, bringing vital investment across our networks
  • unlock regeneration and housing
  • drive environmental resilience

More investment

Cumbria will have more investment with:

  • at least £333 million of funding for Cumbria over the next 30 years
  • access to bid for Mayoral investment money
  • investment to unlock critical infrastructure projects in Cumbria including rail and road upgrades
  • more funding for Cumbria’s priorities
  • more investment in skills and training - tailored to what local employers need, creating more well-paid jobs in Cumbria
